Source-USEPA website: Turbidity refers to cloudiness of water. Turbidity has no health effects, but can interfere with disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth. Turbidity may indicate the presence of disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches.

When turbidity exceeds the maximum allowable limit (e.g., 1 NTU for conventional or direct filtration), water suppliers must notify the state within 24 hours. For violations of the 95th percentile limit (e.g., greater than 0.3 NTU for conventional or direct filtration), water suppliers must notify their customers as soon as practical, but no later than 30 days after the system learns of the violation.
